SWPS showcased a weekend of remarkable performances of Made in Dagenham before half term.. Based on the true story of the 1968 Ford sewing machine strike, this musical adaptation by Richard Bean has garnered critical acclaim for its powerful message and catchy tunes.

The production – produced and directed by Ms White and Miss Whitfield – aimed to entertain whilst conveying a message of female empowerment through its catchy songs and humorous characters. Mrs Tham-Williams – Musical Director – led a talented group of musicians. For the students involved, this production was not only an opportunity to showcase their talents, but also emphasized the importance of equality and standing firm in their beliefs.

With a cast of over 60 students, ranging from Year 8 to Sixth Form, everyone displayed dedication and passion during the rehearsals which began in November. The production not only allowed for the emergence of new friendships but also fostered a supportive community of actors.

The success of the production was a result of the collaborative efforts of both students and staff. The set – designed by our artist-in-residence Lizzie – was brought to life by the Art Department and Art students, creating an authentic 1960s Dagenham factory setting.

With three performances across two nights, the whole school musical Made in Dagenham was a resounding success. The opening night saw the entire school come together in support of the hotly anticipated production with the excitement extending beyond the school, seeing members of the local community and SWPS Alumnae in attendance.

The cast delivered remarkable performances, breathing life into the story through their voices and heartfelt portrayals of the characters. Performances enthralled the audiences, experiencing a rollercoaster of emotions as they laughed, cried, and cheered along. The production was uplifting and lively whilst being incredibly powerful. It was evident that the whole school production of Made in Dagenham was a resounding success, not only as a theatrical performance, but also as a celebration of equality and empowerment.

As the final curtain fell on Saturday evening, we couldn’t have been prouder of what our students and staff had all accomplished together.

Erin S – the lead actress portraying Rita O’Grady – delivered an astounding, emotionally fuelled performance, taking us on her journey as Rita grows in confidence leading her worker colleagues to a victory.  Tilly C played Eddie O’Grady, Rita’s beloved husband, and sang a beautiful, emotionally-charged rendition of ‘The Letter’.

Eden S, who played Clare, one of the sewing machinists in the factory, encapsulated Clare’s comical lack of vocabulary and scattiness, had the audience roaring with laughter. Eden shared her thoughts on the musical, stating, “This production is truly empowering and serves as a wonderful platform for our ‘all-girls school’ to demonstrate our support for women in the workplace and the importance of not overlooking their contributions.”

Rosie K, who portrayed Tooley – a character called over from America to assist with the women’s strike – embodied the unsympathetic nature of her role with great skill. Her portrayal truly captured Tooley’s character and left a lasting impression on the audience.

The commitment and dedication displayed by everyone involved, from the cast to the production team, was truly extraordinary. Under the direction of Ms. White and Miss Whitfield, the musical direction by Mrs Tham-Williams, and the expertise of the lighting and sound crew, the journey to bring this production to the stage was a true marathon. The overwhelmingly positive feedback from the audience is a testament to the fantastic production and the journey that was greatly appreciated by all. The school production impacts extended beyond the applause and recognition, it brought the SWPS community together fostering a sense of pride and triumph.  Congratulations to everyone involved in ‘Made In Dagenham’ What an incredible show!
