Dr. Sophie King- a specialist registrar and clinical fellow at John Radcliffe Oxford University Hospital – recently shared her expertise and experiences with the SWPS Medicine Dentistry and Veterinary (MDV) Society.
Dr. King’s valuable insights provided a wealth of information for those interested in pursuing a career in medicine. Embarking on a career in medicine requires strong academic achievements; Dr. King herself studied medicine at Southampton University, known for its patient-centred learning approach integrated early in the curriculum.
Following her time at medical school, DR. King gained experience as a junior doctor at Kingston Hospital and Frimley Park Hospital during her foundation years. Dr. King discussed the daily life of a junior doctor, including the demanding ‘out of hours’ shifts. She also highlighted the qualities that make an ideal junior doctor and the challenges that come with a medical career. Recognising the mental demands and long hours, Dr. King emphasised the importance of maintaining a healthy work-life balance to prevent burnout and promote mental well-being. She encouraged aspiring doctors to explore different specialties and gain exposure to various medical environments through shadowing, internships, and networking. These experiences provide valuable insights into daily responsibilities and aid in choosing a specific area of medicine to focus on.
The discussion concluded with an open forum where members of the MDV society had the opportunity to ask questions. A career in medicine offers immense fulfilment, as it involves saving lives, improving patient outcomes, and making a lasting impact on individuals and communities. We extend our gratitude to Dr. Sophie King for sharing her time and knowledge with our SWPS MDV society, providing invaluable guidance for those considering a career in medicine.
