Numerous exciting musical events and activities have left a lasting impression on the school community this term. From the Valedictory Celebrations to the Young Musician of the Year competition, the Music Department has been at the heart of the school life.
The Music Scholars’ Recital
The Music Scholars’ Recital showcased the incredible talent within the department, with students demonstrating their musical prowess in a stunning performance that wowed the audience.
Philharmonic Orchestra
One of this term’s highlights for the SWPS Musicians was their captivating evening at the Royal Festival Hall. The enchanting performance by the Philharmonic Orchestra, featuring Elgar’s Enigma Variations conducted by Santtu-Matias Rouvali, left a lasting impact on the students. The performance was further elevated by the remarkable rendition of Shostakovich’s First Cello Concerto by renowned cellist Sol Gabetta. Her technical prowess and emotional resonance left the students inspired and motivated to excel in their own musical pursuits.
SWPS Young Musician of the Year competition.
The SWPS Young Musician of the Year competition was a tremendous success, showcasing an abundance of exceptional musical talent. The competition was expertly judged by Alasdair Hill, a highly experienced musician who has played in numerous renowned orchestras, including the National Symphony Orchestra. In addition to his orchestral work, Alasdair is frequently sought after for recording sessions across various genres. With his talent and expertise, he was the perfect choice to adjudicate this year’s competition. Andrew Garrido served as the accompanist for the evening, having performed at prestigious venues such as the Fazioli Concert Hall in Italy, Milton Court, St John’s Smith Square, Shoreditch Treehouse, and Abbey Road Studios. A heartfelt congratulations to all the students who participated, and a special congratulations to Evie, Rachel, and Anisha for their well-deserved victories in their respective categories. Evie C excelled in the Intermediate Category, performing at a Grade 5 ABRSM level. Rachel H highlighted her talent in the Senior Category, performing at a Grade 6/7 ABRSM level. Lastly, Anisha N impressed in the Advanced Category, performing at a Grade 8 and above level. It was truly an exceptional evening filled with outstanding performances by our SWPS Musicians. We hope they feel an immense sense of pride for their professionalism and dedication to their craft.
Summer Music Soiree
The Summer Music Soiree provided a wonderful platform for all our SWPS music ensembles. it was a joyous evening and the event concluded with the Jazz band and a rendition of ‘Valerie’ by Mark Ronson.
ABRSM Music Exams
This term saw numerous students undertaking ABRSM Music Exams, allowing them to formalize and demonstrate their musical proficiency and knowledge.
Year 7 Band Day
The commitment to providing holistic music education was further evident in the inaugural Year 7 Band Day. This event allowed students to immerse themselves in the world of rock and pop bands, learning the essential skills of playing together in a band setting. The day concluded with a delightful performance in the afternoon, where parents and staff gathered to witness the students’ productive day.
