On the sports field and in the water SWPS continued to go from strength to strength during the summer term, with teams competing in District events in Athletics, Badminton, Cross-Country and Rounders and at County level in Netball and Hockey. It is exciting that the experience of our coaching staff has been strengthened by the addition of Rose Thomas, former Great Britain and Wales Hockey Goalkeeper and England Pathway Coach.
Athletics
In May SWPS attended Notre Dame’s multi-event athletics meet for our Year 7 and 8s. Well done to all our athletes who threw, jumped, sprinted, and endured in their events. The athletic success continued at the Claremont Fan Court Athletics meet in June, where our SWPS students gained a plethora of first places and personal bests against strong opposition. Congratulations to Daniella S, Lucy R, Poppy S. Avaani K. A special congratulations to Jasmine, Sara-Louise, Isla and Katie who have all been selected for the North-West Surrey District Team.
Cricket
Cricket is becoming increasingly popular at SWPS, with six teams playing fixtures across Years 7 to 9 with our U13A remaining undefeated in all their matches. An Inter-House competition was introduced for these year groups for the first time; well done to Montagu for winning Year 7, Lonsdale for winning Year 8 and to Quant for coming first for Year 9.
Hockey
Our SWPS U14 A & B Hockey teams have had a very successful year and have remained undefeated all season.
Our SWPS students were treated to watch the women’s GB hockey team compete in the Hockey Pro-league action at Lee Valley Stadium. The Great Britain vs USA was an exciting match with Team GB scoring the winning goal in the last few minutes of the match.
Netball
Netball this year at SWPS has gone from strength to strength with our U12, U13, and U15 becoming District netball champions and runners-up U14s. Also, the U13A and U15A teams qualified for the County Netball Finals, beating some very strong competition along the way. This is the first time for many years that SWPS has been represented at this level.
Year 7 and 8s had an exciting evening in April at Surrey Sports Park watching Surrey Storms playing against London Pulse, picking up some tips and game play.
Jersey Year 9 Hockey and Netball Tour
Our Year 9s spent a long weekend in Jersey at the end of May for a hockey and netball tour. The weekend was packed full of netball and hockey matches plus time at the Aquadome and adventure park. The players challenged their fears, tested their limits, and supported their friends. Other lasting memories of the weekend included a rousing ‘Happy birthday’ to Kaitlin, and a bowling match trying our best to beat Mr O’Connell’s winning score of 112!
Rounders
SWPS has seen some phenomenal success with our rounders teams this term. Our SWPS students have become Rounders District Champions for Year 8, 9 and 10. Congratulations to all our district champions.
Rugby
This term the Year 7 and 8 SWPS students were fortunate to have the opportunity for a rugby taster session. The event was open to all Year 7 and 8s whether they had played the game before or were completely new to the sport. The session was run by the head coach of Reeds Rebels girls’ rugby at Reeds Weybridge RFC, Martin Davidson. The students took to the field and could be seen practicing passing and tackling. Thank you, Martin Davidson, for taking the time to visit SWPS especially as our students loved it!
Thank you for the wonderful feedback we have received:
I found the session fun and exciting. It was great to see many people getting involved especially because not many if at all had played before. I can say for definite that it was a big success and I am so glad they had a chance to find time to have a rugby session. I hope there will be more in the future. – Annabel
Swimming
Congratulations to all our swimmers who represented SWPS so well at the District Swimming Gala. Genevieve W (Y9) competed in the annual biathlon at Thames Turbo for the Dylan Howells Foundation Charity. With an outstanding performance, Genevieve won her age group for the second year in a row.
Tennis
At the beginning of May, SWPS had a wonderful day at the Surrey Tennis Festival, congratulations to our U12s, Evie K and Chloe A who made the semi-finals.
Later in the term, the SWPS Junior and Senior tournaments took place with some excellent and entertaining matches. Congratulations to our Junior Tournament winners and runners-up: Rachel H winning the cup, Annabelle H and Chloe A. The senior Tennis Tournament saw some fierce serves and competitive matches. After some long qualifying group matches in the heat the cup, plate winners and runners-up were Sarah J, Sofia G, Freya H, and Katie H.
SWPS Sports Day
Sports Day was a great success – congratulations to Quant for winning the trophy and for all our athletes – those who won their categories or achieved personal bests, but also to all the others who took part and gave it their best shot for their house. Congratulations to Pankhurst who won the Year 7 House competition, and to Quant for winning the Year 8, 9, and 10s House competition. One of the highlights was the annual ‘Teachers v Sixth Form race’.
SWPS Sports Awards 2023
SWPS hosted the 2023 Sports Awards to celebrate the outstanding netball and hockey players and say farewell to what has been another memorable year. Of particular note was securing District netball champions for U12, U13, U15 and runners-up U14s, and our U13s coming second in the Surrey hockey tournament.
