Following last year’s success, SWPS held another sponsored Languathon with the aim of helping to promote the awareness of the diverse range of languages used throughout our community, with the added benefit of raising money for the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC).
Students and staff were challenged with speaking any language(s) other than English for the duration of the school day; either a language spoken at home or a modern foreign language taught at SWPS. All students taking part wore a sticker to show which language(s) they were speaking for the day, and for those a little apprehensive about speaking a foreign language for the whole day, they were assisted with translation apps and dictionaries.
Students also joined in with an international food sale; students were invited to donate traditional dishes from any international countries to raise further funds for the DEC. Culinary delights ranged from samosas, loukoumi and baobuns; a delicious way to taste something new from around the world.
To culminate, students were taught the alphabet and how to introduce themselves in a British Sign Language workshop run by Sophie, one of our Sixth Form students; a fantastic opportunity to learn some extremely helpful communication skills! Not only did the event celebrate our diverse culture, it raised over £1000 for the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC), with all funds going to help to support those suffering from recent disasters around the world. Thank you to Sixth Form students Akriti and Alexa for organising the celebration of languages event and fundraising for the DEC.
