Royal Society of Biology Challenge
Congratulations to all the Year 10 students who participated in the Royal Society of Biology Challenge. This year, a remarkable 45,400 students from all over the world participated in the competition, making it a truly global event. We are excited to share that our school earned a total of nine gold awards, making up 5% of all participants nationally. Additionally, our students also achieved 10 silver awards, 17 bronze awards, 11 highly commended awards, nine commended awards, and 12 certificates for participation. This incredible success truly reflects the hard work and commitment of both our students and teachers. Congratulations to everyone involved!
Homerton, Cambridge Biology Challenge
Three teams of SWPS Biologists participated in the Homerton, Cambridge Biology Challenge competition. Natasha W and Emily W represented Year 11, while Shreya G led the Year 12 team alongside Alice W, Emily G, Inaara J, Ava-Mae M, and Sara S. The teams tackled three rounds, answering questions like: Why don’t animals have wheels? Are humans still evolving? and ‘Which species in your local area showcases the most fascinating biology?’ Their outstanding performance earned them a Highly Commended recognition.
Chemistry Club
The Chemistry Club has continued to captivate students with its engaging activities, thanks to the efforts of our Chemistry ambassadors, Anisha and Hattie. From demonstrating the creation of a chemical traffic light using a colour-changing indicator to crafting mesmerizing lava lamps inside a measuring cylinder, their innovative and hands-on approach has made learning chemistry an exciting subject for our students. Additionally, the club organised a session where the Year 7 students learned how to create a carbon sugar snake, sparking their interest in the fascinating world of chemical reactions.
Science Club
Our Science Club continues to be a hub of creativity and exploration, with students showcasing their skills in electrical engineering. Nimaya, Asya, Nandika, Imogen, Sienna, and Renee wowed their peers by designing and constructing glowing animal badges using simple components such as wires, batteries, and lights. This hands-on project not only honed their electrical engineering skills but also inspired them to delve deeper into the realm of STEM.
MDV Year 10 Taster Practical Workshop – Blood Typing
Our prospective medics in Year 10s had a fantastic time participating in the MDV Year 10 Taster Practical Workshops. The recent Blood Typing and Vital Signs workshops were a big hit, coinciding perfectly with their Year 10 Sixth Form Taster Day. It was wonderful to see our students engaging in hands-on experiences and working alongside our Sixth Form students.
Winchester Science Centre and Planetarium
Year 7 students enjoyed a visit to the Winchester Science Centre and Planetarium by way of an extension of their study of Space and cross-curricular Mission to Mars projects from the previous term. Students immersed themselves in interactive displays, enjoyed a captivating show in the Planetarium, and actively participated in a hands-on workshop. The visit not only enhanced their understanding of scientific concepts but also ignited their curiosity about the wonders of the universe.
