Our Year 12 and 13 students have been diving into the world of life drawing as part of their Art A Level course. These sessions are a highly valuable resource to our students, as life drawing enhances first-hand observational skills, and hand-eye coordination and often aids relaxation. In a recent class, our Year 13 students swapped their usual chalk and charcoal and explored collage to create their figure compositions. Taking inspiration from Matisse’s famous cut-out works, they were given a pile of coloured paper, glue and scissors and were left to work their magic! This approach was entirely new to the students, and they embraced the significant challenge and created a series of dynamic and innovative compositions.
“Super fun. I liked not only sketching and doing something new. It was hard to work out the proportions whilst cutting and referring to the model, but the challenge was good!” Diya
“I loved this new approach to life drawing since I was just able to focus on the shapes within the figure rather than how the final outcome of my work would look.” Sarah
“I loved it! It was fun and different. I really liked experimenting with observational collage. It was quite tricky at first, but once I got it, I really enjoyed it.” Miah
