Dress a Girl Around the World

For the fourth consecutive year, our Year 10 GCSE Design and Technology: Textiles students have contributed their skills to support the charity Dress a Girl Around the World. This organisation works to ensure that every girl, regardless of her circumstances, has at least one dress of her own.

Our students crafter high-quality dresses with matching shorts, mastering advanced construction techniques such as gathering, binding and French seams. These skills denabded care and precision, and the results reflect the students’ hard work and focus.

Well done to Year 10 for your creativity, resilience and attention to detail. Your contributions will bring both practicality and joy to girls around the world.

SWPS Sewing Bee – Calico Dolls for Epsom & St Helier Hospital Children’s Ward

This half term, our SWPS Sewing Bee Club has been buzzing with activity, creating calico dolls for local hospital children’s wards. Students from Year 7 through to Year 10 have collaborated each week to cut, stitch and fill these thoughtful creations.

The dolls play a vital role in supporting young patients during their hospital stay. Children can decorate and personalise the dolls to express their emotions, such as fears or unhappiness, offering a comforting distraction. They can also use the dolls to indicate areas of pain or injury, helping facilitate clearer communication with adults.

In addition, NHS staff use the dolls to demonstrate procedures, helping children understand what to expect and easing their anxiety. This simple but effective tool allows even very young children, as young as two or three years old, to face medical procedures with greater calm and confidence.

A big thank you to all our sewing bees for your teamwork and dedication. Your efforts are making a meaningful difference in the lives of young patients and their families.
