The 2024 Young Economist of the Year competition invites students from Year 10 to Year 13 to present their own ideas on contemporary economic issues affecting the UK and the world. Participants could choose from five different topics, and Eden selected the question, “Do you think the government should subsidise the purchase of electric cars?” With a limit of 1,000 words, Eden employed her critical thinking and research skills to produce a robust and clear economic analysis, supported by relevant data. During the finals, she delivered a speech and presentation at KPMG in Canary Wharf.
Eden, along with her fellow finalists, was invited to 11 Downing Street, where they had the rare opportunity to tour the premises and meet Sam Beckett, the Chief Economic Advisor and Head of the Government Economic Service. The group engaged in discussions on significant topics such as the economy, current events, and career opportunities in government. This achievement underscores Eden’s dedication and hard work, as well as her courage to tackle various challenges in life.
Taking part in the Young Economist of the Year competition has been an opportune experience to break out of my comfort zone and try new things. I was able to learn about economic concepts, connect with experienced professionals who work at the Financial Times and BBC, and hone my skills in public speaking, writing, and communication. I recommend this competition as there is a wide range of questions to choose from, but I also further recommend exposing yourself to unfamiliar areas in general. I have never studied economics before, so the process of this competition was challenging, but I now feel more confident to take on those kinds of challenges.
