At SWPS, the ethos of championing the individual is not just a motto but a way of life. At the heart of SWPS’ educational philosophy lies a commitment to personalised learning, recognising that each student possesses unique talents, interests, and commitments. We take great pride in sharing the achievements of our students within the community, as they exemplify the core SWPS values of curiosity, ambition, and generosity. Here are a few stories of our outstanding students who continue to shine:

Grace B:

In honour of Science Week and her deep interest in astronomy and astrophysics, Grace, a Year 12 student, showcased her expertise as part of the Guildford Astronomical Society and a student ambassador for a remote telescope company. Grace delivered a captivating presentation on different types of telescopes, mounts, and eyepieces, utilising her own photos of celestial objects she had captured. Her dedication to and passion for this field is inspiring, and we have no doubt she will pursue a career in astronomy in the future.

Charlize B:

Congratulations to Charlize, who was recently recognised in a scientific publication for her contributions during her two-week work experience program at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL). Charlize played a key role in the development of a PyQT5 graphical user interface (GUI) in python, using MQTT to receive streamed data from the ISIS synchrotron diagnostic devices, enabling better visualisation of proton beam intensity and loss signals during 50 Hz operation. Charlize worked with clients, scientists and users in controls, diagnostics and accelerator physics groups to receive and implement feedback on the company’s prototypes. Her significant contribution was credited in the paper for developing the prototypes which the scientists at RAL used to collect data for their research, and the paper was presented at CERN in the main auditorium over Christmas. We celebrate Charlize’s achievement and her commitment to pushing boundaries in the scientific realm.

Katie H:

We are thrilled to highlight Katie’s recent participation in the Music Connects workshop outside of school. Organized by the Big Leaf Foundation, this initiative aims to foster friendships and mutual understanding among young people from different countries, languages, and cultures through music. As a fan of the Indie band Mother Mother, Katie was invited to join the event and spent a day with Ryan Guldemond, the band’s lead singer and guitarist, as well as Livingstone Brown, a prominent record producer and songwriter. Despite the initial challenge of performing alongside others, Katie stepped out of her comfort zone, showcasing her talent by singing, rapping, and playing instruments. Not only did she gain confidence in her own abilities, but she also formed new friendships and even met her idol, Ryan Guldemond. Katie’s engagement, enthusiasm, and acceptance of others were praised by the Big Leaf Foundation team, reflecting the core SWPS values she consistently demonstrates.

At SWPS, we believe that each student’s unique journey deserves recognition and celebration. These stories of Grace, Charlize, and Katie exemplify the success and personal growth that can be achieved when we embrace and nurture individual talents and aspirations. We encourage all our students to continue pursuing their passions and challenging themselves, as they truly embody what it means to be a part of the SWPS community.  Please keep us updated with the latest endeavours of our student community, as we always look forward to hearing about their achievements. Together, let’s continue championing the individual and fostering a culture of excellence at SWPS.
