This term has been an exciting time for our Biology department, with students engaging in a variety of enriching activities that have not only deepened their understanding of biological concepts but also showcased their talents and creativity.
Our Year 13 students achieved remarkable success in the Cambridge Biology Challenge! Presenting their work at the Biology Society, they showcased their submission and demonstrated their deep understanding of complex biological themes. Their hard work and dedication paid off, as they secured 1st place in their round, marking a significant achievement for our school community.
In addition to preparing for competitions, Year 13s have been diligently studying inheritance by examining and cross-breeding Drosophila (fruit flies). This hands-on approach allowed them to observe genetic traits first-hand, enhancing their understanding of inheritance patterns and the principles of genetics.
This term, our Year 12 Biology students also embraced creativity in their learning by creating Reebops, a fun and engaging model of Meiosis. Utilizing marshmallows to construct these imaginary creatures, they delved into the processes of genetic variation and inheritance, making the study of cell division a deliciously memorable experience!
Meanwhile, our Year 11 students participated in a colourful and collaborative activity during our “Colourful Jumper Day,” where they built models of DNA. This creative initiative not only brightened up the school atmosphere but also enabled students to visualise the structure of DNA, reinforcing their understanding of its significance in genetics.
Overall, this term has been filled with both academic successes and creative endeavours in the Biology department, highlighting our students’ enthusiasm for learning and their innovative approaches to understanding complex scientific concepts. We are proud of their achievements and look forward to seeing how they will continue to explore the fascinating world of biology in the coming terms!
