Becoming a Pilot

Last term, we ran a careers seminar for students about becoming a pilot. Globally we learnt only 5% of pilots are women, so this was a great talk to encourage more students into the industry. The talk was hosted by a Nick Handford from FTA Global, a flight training school.  The students would need to pay for the cost of the training which is a barrier to entry for many as it is around £90,000. However, the starting salaries start at around £50,000 so the cost can be recouped fairly quickly. Covid recovery has meant the industry is starting to see an increase in travel and the industry expects that they will need more pilots, so it is a good time to start training. The medical restrictions have eased in recent years allowing more people to apply.
